You Want Fresh, You Buy Safe: Tackling The ‘Pitch Paradox’

Across our industry, brand leaders seem to be clamouring for the same thing: new thinking, new ideas, originality, freshness, and innovation in all things. And yet, funnily enough, when it comes time to actually pull the trigger, all too often what we’re ending up with is the same-old same-old. Tired cliches that will never cut through in crowded markets.

So what is going on? This tension sits at the centre of the European Experience Index™ (EEX) 2025, a new benchmark study from 27Names that brings together agency and client perspectives from 27 European markets. As a proud member of 27Names, We Are Collider has spent a great deal of time sifting through the findings, looking beyond the headlines to understand what they mean for brands and for the future of experiential marketing.

One insight stood out. Not because it shocked us, but because it captured a dynamic many agencies can recognise instinctively. The report calls it the “Pitch Paradox,” and it helps explain why so much brand experience work feels safer than brands say they want it to be.

The Pitch Paradox explained

According to the EEX, 56% of clients initiate a pitch to seek fresh perspectives. They are actively seeking new thinking, new creative partners and new ways to engage audiences; in principle, innovation is the brief. And yet when it comes to awarding the work, priorities somehow shift. 42% of clients say full-service capability is the decisive factor, while only 18% choose creative-only services. Brands ask for innovation, yet 75% of agencies report facing increased budget pressure from clients. Brands ask for innovation, fresh ideas and something thats never been done before, but investment and decision making lean heavily towards tried and tested and what feels secure.

This is not a contradiction so much as a reflection of how people make decisions under pressure. Behavioural science tells us that when risk is high, perceived loss carries more weight than potential gain, so when clients are choosing a partner, they can err on the side of caution, ultimately opting for one that feels established, broad and operationally safe, which reduces anxiety, even if it also limits creative ambition.

In practice, this means pitches often reward reassurance over originality. Ideas that feel bold in the room are quietly edged out by solutions that feel easier to defend internally. Safety becomes the deciding factor, even when everyone involved agrees that safety alone will not drive growth or differentiation.

Why this thinking costs everyone

The impact of this paradox is keenly felt on both sides of the table. Clients pay a price. Teams spend months searching for novelty, aligning stakeholders around the need for change, only to default to familiar choices at the final hurdle. That cycle consumes energy and slows momentum. It also makes it harder for genuinely new thinking to take root, as innovation becomes something discussed rather than delivered. For agencies, pitches demand significant investment. Time, talent and strategic thinking are poured into showcasing creativity, often within shrinking budgets and compressed timelines. When decisions lean toward scale or incumbency rather than bold ideas, the incentive to take creative risks diminishes. Over time, that shapes the range of ideas, often steering toward safer options.

This is not about blaming clients for being cautious. Risk management is part of any serious business decision, but when risk aversion dominates the process, everyone misses the opportunity to create brand experiences that truly move people and shift behaviour.

The Collider view: safety and spark belong together

At We Are Collider, we believe that the tension between creativity and capability is a false choice. Brands should not have to choose between ideas that excite and delivery that reassures. This is why our approach is built around combining both. We consider ourselves a boutique brand experience agency, which gives us agility, focus and creative sharpness. Ideas move quickly from strategy to execution, without being diluted by layers of process. At the same time, our work is grounded in behavioural science and rigorous planning, so bold concepts are supported by clear logic and operational confidence.

This balance means we can reduce perceived risk without sacrificing ambition. Clients get work that stands out creatively, while knowing it will be delivered to the highest standard. Our partnerships with brands such as Red Bull and Pokémon reflect this approach. The work is bold but also robust, designed to perform as well as to impress. And as expectations around accountability evolve, so too does our approach to proving effectiveness.

Predictive ROI that powers creative confidence

To strengthen this balance further, we’re developing a new ROI intelligence layer within our process. Currently in beta-testing, We Are Collider’s proprietary AI‑enabled ROI Predictor brings a predictive component to experiential planning, moving measurement from something retrospective to something anticipatory. By analysing inputs such as audience behaviour, channel dynamics and content scalability, the tool estimates the likely commercial impact of an activation before it is produced.

For clients, this means bold ideas come with clearer reassurance: potential reach, engagement and ripple effects can be modelled upfront, giving senior stakeholders greater confidence to invest in standout work. It’s another way we remove perceived risk without diluting ambition, enabling creativity that excites, supported by data that convinces.

Choose better, not (just) safer

The Pitch Paradox will not disappear overnight. Budget pressure, internal scrutiny and market uncertainty are not going away, but brands can make more intentional choices about how they respond to these forces. The real question is not whether you value innovation or reliability. You need both. What matters is finding a brand experience agency that can prove they understand the risk, manage it intelligently and still push the work forward.

Settling for safety alone rarely delivers progress. The strongest brand experiences are built where confidence and creativity meet. Discover how We Are Collider brings those two forces together at https://wearecollider.com/our-work/
